About us
1974 : ESTABLISHMENT
Born in The Hague but raised in Westland, René van der Horst went to work as an instrument maker after school. Soon, René made the switch to horticulture. He became a contractor and started picking tomatoes. During quiet periods, René performed maintenance on pipes and greenhouse gutters. Painting existing greenhouse gutters soon expanded and René also started working on new construction projects. One thing led to another: in 1974, spraying company R. van der Horst was founded!
1977 : paint
In 1977, Van der Horst develops its own paint mixture together with the current paint manufacturer. This paint was specially developed for heating pipes in greenhouse construction. Time does not stand still in this field either. Van der Horst continues to develop its products.
1991 : getting off the land
The men are still spraying and painting outside. In the grower’s field. This changes in the early 1990s. The government banned spraying and painting material outdoors for environmental reasons. To meet the stricter environmental requirements, René moved the work from the countryside to the business hall at Mercuriusplein in Poeldijk. To this day, the company still operates here.
2000: International
Besides horticulturists, installation companies, construction companies, contractors and greenhouse construction companies also know where to find Van der Horst. More and more Dutch contractors are building greenhouses outside the Netherlands. Van der Horst joins the international market. And with success!
2017 : new corporate identity
A new corporate identity is introduced. Fresh and contemporary. The colours are reused, blue and yellow. The well-known Van der Horst painting buses are therefore not to be missed in the Westland scene.
2018 : fROM FATHER TO SON
After completing his HTS studies, René’s son, René first looked around and gained experience at other companies in the horticultural sector. Still, Ren could not let go of the business and in 2007 he decided to join his father. 11 years later, in 2018, Ren takes over the running of the company from his father.
I am proud of what we have achieved. But that does not mean we will sit still. Invest and innovate, collaborate, become more sustainable…. There are still many ideas for the future!

2020 : EK Coatings
In January 2020, Van der Horst will acquire a powder coating company in Montfoort, EK Coatings (formerly Koppers Coatings). The company can pre-treat and powder coat a variety of products.
future?
Van der Horst meets strict environmental requirements but is always looking at what can be done even better. More sustainable. Without affecting quality. All with an eye on the future. The goal? To supply as many pipes and/or construction materials with high quality requirements sprayed or painted in the Netherlands and abroad with an increasingly green Van der Horst signature.
